Labor Day Weekend Activations 74 and 75

 The XYL and I took a trip to West Texas. Marfa, that is.  We stopped along the way for a few POTA activations.   We stayed overnight in San Angelo, home of Angelo State University, my mothers Alma Mater from back in the late 1970s.   We activated US-3053 San Angelo State Park on Thursday morning and got 20 QSOs in an hour, mostly CW.  The wife wanted to hear a few QSOs beyond the DITs and DAHs so I squeezed in a few SSB contacts to keep the peace.  We got to see the state bison herd on the way out, a highlight of the park and everyone left happy!  








We reached Marfa late Thursday afternoon in time for some good food and checked into the Hotel Paisano, where they filmed parts of the movie Giant which starred Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean.  I headed out Friday morning to activate US-11900 Blackwell School National Historic Site.  Not much to see but an important part of our state's history that marked the end of segregation in our public schools.  

I made 40 QSOs in 75 minutes, all CW.  Propagation was exceptional!

Hamclock 4.10 Up and Running WSL

I was able to get Hamclock up and running in Christmas Eve just in time to see the Santa tracker.   Very nice edition to the shack — its a fully configurable kiosk-style application that provides real time space weather, radio propagation models, operating events and other information particularly useful to the radio amateur. I’ve been running Hamclock in a full screen in a Chrome browser window (F11 toggles full screen).  Its  FB to access from my tablet in addition to the host PC on my local private network. With a few commands provided in the step by step guide by W4CAE you can run HAMCLOCK on Windows 10 / 11 using the Ubuntu  WSL. FTdx3000 - configuring external panadapter using SDRPlay RSP1A

 The panadapter on the FTdx3000 is fine but not great.   I'm using SDRuno with the SDRPlay RSP1A  which is a significant upgrade!   Cost was minimal since I already had a RSP1a stored in a  drawer waiting for a problem to solve.   Hardware configuration is straight forward.  On the back of the FTdx3000, connect the IF OUT (RCA connector) to antenna input on the RSP1a.  I needed a cable with RCA to SMA adapter.  Plug in USB connections from the RSP1a to the computer, and another from the FTdx3000 radio to your computer. Download and install OmniRig from dxatlas.  Omnirig provides CAT control for the Yaesu radio - allowing you to automatically tune into any frequency by clicking signal in panadapter waterfall.   Find the SiliconLabs Enhanced Comm port (use Ports in Device Manager)- you need to use the same com port and speed settings in the omnirig and sdruno configurations.
